SANTA CLARA -- Darcel McBath, primarily a 49ers special-teams contributor during last season's Super Bowl run, won't be part of this season's encore effort. McBath was placed on injured reserve Thursday, apparently because of a foot injury he sustained Friday at Kansas City.

Replacing McBath on the 90-man roster is linebacker Joe Holland, who was claimed off waivers from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Holland originally signed with the 49ers last year as an undrafted free agent from Purdue. After the 49ers cut him Aug. 31, he was signed to the practice squads of the Miami Dolphins and Buccaneers.

When the 49ers opened training camp in search of a starter at free safety to replace Dashon Goldson, McBath wasn't among the four leading candidates mentioned by defensive coordinator Vic Fangio, who instead sided with Eric Reid, Craig Dahl, C.J. Spillman and Trenton Robinson.

McBath's first career fumble recovery came in last November's tie against the St. Louis Rams, and it set up a 20-yard Frank Gore touchdown run on the ensuing snap.
