SANTA CLARA -- The NFL fined quarterback Colin Kaepernick $7,875 fine for a facemask penalty in the 49ers' loss Sunday to the Carolina Panthers.

A league spokesman could not answer the last time or how often a quarterback has been fined for such an infraction.

Kaepernick grabbed the facemask of Panthers linebacker A.J. Klein on a second-quarter play that ultimately was recorded as a 14-yard sack, with the Panthers declining Kaepernick's 15-yard facemask penalty.

Panthers safety Quinton Mikell got docked $7,875 for a late-hit on Kaepernick after he slid down on a third-quarter scramble.

The 49ers (6-3) leave Friday for New Orleans, where they will try to hand the Saints (7-2) their first home loss this season.
