American 18, Arroyo 14

FREMONT -- The American High football team used a stifling defense to hang on for a hard-fought 18-14 win over Arroyo on Saturday in the season-opener for both teams at Tak Fudenna Stadium. 
PLEASANTON -- Host Amador Valley got off to a hot start to the 2014 season, scoring touchdowns on each of its first five possessions, cruising to a victory against Washington.  
 
Kyle Kearns threw for 232 yards and three touchdowns and the Foothill High football team's defense picked off five passes to open the season with a 30-12 win over San Leandro at Burrell Field on Friday night.  
 
SAN LORENZO -- The visiting Titans' offense was effective both on the ground and in the air in its dismantling of the Rebels on Friday.The Titans rushed for 385 yards and four touchdowns, including a game-high 136 yards by Kaleem Abubukari and 105 yards by Josh McKinnie.

Robert Shaver, a longtime employee, will be the Alameda County Water District's new general manager and earn $305,000 in total compensation. In December, he will replace Walt Wadlow, the district's general manager since 2009.  
 
With one exception, this is essentially the same measure that narrowly failed to garner the needed two-thirds voter approval in 2012. We agree that funding our transportation systems is critical for the region's economy. But that doesn't justify open-ended taxation with no regard for the trade-offs.  
 
Those wondering if Tesla Motors and Fremont will continue strengthening their relationship soon might see a sign. A very large illuminated sign between Tesla's factory and Interstate 880, to be exact.  
 
Although all available campsites in the East Bay Regional Parks are booked for Labor Day weekend, take heart: day-trippers can choose from what is almost an overabundance of activities and events. Let's start with the 14th Annual Historic Rail Fair at Ardenwood Historic Farm in Fremont.
