Marines to show items as part of Fleet Week

The USS Hornet Museum at Pier 3 in Alameda Point will host a display of U.S. Marine Corps weapons and equipment as part of San Francisco Fleet Week from Oct. 5-7.

The items are from the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit and will be on display adjacent to the aircraft carrier. The free exhibit will be open all three days from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

A Navy Band concert, "Salute to East Bay Veterans," is also planned as part of Fleet Week. It will take place from noon to 1:30 p.m. Oct. 5 near Oakland City Hall.

La Russa to visit Books Inc. on Saturday

Tony La Russa, the third most winningest manager in baseball history, will talk and sign copies of his memoir "One Last Strike" at 3 p.m. Saturday at Books Inc., 1344 Park St.

La Russa reviews his career in the book, including his championship years with the Oakland A's, as well as his long career as manager of the St. Louis Cardinals, which won the 2012 World Series.

Tickets are $30 and include a copy of "One Last Strike" and the opportunity to have it autographed. Tickets may be purchased at www.booksinc.net/event/tony-la-russa-books-inc-alameda. A portion of the sales will benefit the Alameda Education Foundation, which will host a "pregame" party at the store at 6 p.m. with food and beverages.
