First-round NCS byes for Albany, Bishop O'Dowd

The Bishop O'Dowd and Albany High girls volleyball teams both nabbed top-three seeds in the North Coast Section Division III girls playoffs and received a first-round bye. The second-seeded Dragons (27-6) will start playoff action in the quarterfinals on Nov. 10 at 7 p.m. when they host the winner of a Nov. 7 Del Norte-Analy match. The result of that match was not available at press time. The third-seeded Cougars (33-5) will host No. 6 seed Petaluma (18-12) on Nov. 10 at 7 p.m. in a quarterfinal match.

Thiel, Berkeley duo win championships

Piedmont High's Kaelli Thiel won the West Alameda Athletic Conference-Foothill Division singles championship with a 6-0, 6-0 defeat of Bishop O'Dowd's Jenna DeTurk in the final on Nov. 3 at Harbor Bay Club in Alameda. Thiel lost only a total of two games in her three tournament matches. Berkeley's Cara Chinn and Sofia Jacob took the doubles title with a 7-6 (4), 7-5 victory over Bishop O'Dowd's Kristina Lorch and Yasmine McCroden in the final.

John F. Kennedy-Fremont vs. El Cerrito at De Anza High, football, Nov. 10, 7 p.m. -- The No. 1 seed Gauchos start their postseason against the 16th-seeded Titans (4-6).

Petaluma at Albany, girls volleyball, Nov. 10, 7 p.m. -- The defending NCS Division III champion Cougars begin their postseason with a home match in the NCS Division III quarterfinals.

Gabe Arias-Sheridan, St. Joseph Notre Dame boys cross country -- Arias-Sheridan won the Tri-County Athletic League boys championship race on Nov. 1 with a time of 15 minutes, 40 seconds for the 2.9 mile course at Point Pinole Regional Shoreline-Richmond.

Duc Nguyen, Alameda boys cross country -- Nguyen placed third in the WACC championship race with a time of 15:46.1, leading his team to a second-place finish.

Corey Sails, Encinal football -- Sails rushed for 65 yards and scored a pair of second-half touchdowns as the Jets defeated Hayward 32-7 on Nov. 2. He also caught a pass for 27 yards.

Diribe Abdo, Berkeley girls cross country -- Abdo won the WACC championship race on Nov. 3 by over 40 seconds with a time of 18 minutes, 15.3 seconds for the 3.0 mile Hayward High course.

Tyrone Campbell, Skyline football -- Campbell rushed for 197 yards and a touchdown on 22 carries in the Titans' 41-14 loss to Oakland Tech on Nov. 3.

Kevin Flemer, St. Mary's football -- Flemer completed 14 of his 25 passes for 219 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions as the Panthers defeated Pinole Valley 28-17 on Nov. 2.

Eugene Hamilton III, Bishop O'Dowd boys cross country -- Hamilton won the WACC championship race on Nov. 3 with an impressive time of 15 minutes, 24.7 seconds on the 3.0 mile Hayward High course.

Kaelli Thiel, Piedmont girls tennis -- Thiel won the WACC-Foothill Division singles title with three straight-set victories. She lost a total of two games in her three matches.
