First-round NCS byes for Albany, Bishop O'Dowd

  • The Bishop O'Dowd and Albany High girls volleyball teams both nabbed top-three seeds in the North Coast Section Division III girls playoffs and received a first-round bye. The second-seeded Dragons (27-6) will start playoff action in the quarterfinals on Nov. 10 at 7 p.m. when they host the winner of a Nov. 7 Del Norte-Analy match. The result of that match was not available at press time. The third-seeded Cougars (33-5) will host No. 6 seed Petaluma (18-12) on Nov. 10 at 7 p.m. in a quarterfinal match.

    Thiel, Berkeley duo win championships

  • Piedmont High's Kaelli Thiel won the West Alameda Athletic Conference-Foothill Division singles championship with a 6-0, 6-0 defeat of Bishop O'Dowd's Jenna DeTurk in the final on Nov. 3 at Harbor Bay Club in Alameda. Thiel lost only a total of two games in her three tournament matches. Berkeley's Cara Chinn and Sofia Jacob took the doubles title with a 7-6 (4), 7-5 victory over Bishop O'Dowd's Kristina Lorch and Yasmine McCroden in the final.
