It is one reason the Alameda Animal Shelter is so full of dogs and cats. Please help reduce animal overpopulation by spaying or neutering your pet, and encouraging others to do so too.

FAAS is offering a special weekend of free adoptions from today through Sunday. All the pets have been vaccinated (except rabies), microchipped and spayed or neutered. Included in your adoption package is a free health exam certificate for a check-up at a local vet, coupons from various food and litter companies and 20 percent off at Pet Food Express. The shelter will give away free pet beds (donated by Bank of Alameda) with adoptions, while supplies last. If you live in Alameda, you will receive your pets first one-year license for free. The unconditional love from your new pet, that's free too!

The last Santa Paws event is on Sunday at Urban Island Furnishings, 1901 Broadway in Alameda. Please call 510-337-8575 to schedule a photo sitting for your pet.

The fee is $30. This is a benefit for FAAS. They will also have pets available for adoption in addition to the holiday pet boutique.

The shelter has a beautiful new plaque on the wall at the shelter for people to honor the memory of a beloved person or pet. For a donation of $500 or more to the shelter, you can have the name of your loved one engraved on the plaque. Bill Moeller is being remembered by his many friends in the Alameda neighborhood where he cared for people's gardens and pets. Another individual has remembered her wonderful cat "Scaredy." All donations help the shelter care for the homeless animals at the shelter.
