ALAMEDA -- For the third year in a row, Angela's Bistro & Bar will provide free Christmas meals to the community in partnership with several Alameda businesses and congregations.
The community meal is set to take place from noon to 4 p.m. Dec. 25 at 2301 Central Ave. The event includes a special holiday dinner and dessert, as well as free Alameda Theatre movie tickets for the first 250 guests.
"It's very important to give back to the community and that's always been a part of Angela's mission," said Lisa McKnight, the restaurant's business manager. "And we're very lucky to have so many generous community partners help us out."
Groups and businesses working with Angela's Bistro for the event include Alameda Theatre & Cineplex, Feel Good Bakery, Twin Towers United Methodist Church, Tucker's Ice Cream, Crystal River Xmas Tree, R&B Cellars, Dan's Produce and Young's Market.
Serving a meal for more than 1,000 people requires a lot of volunteers and plenty of tables, so Angela's and Twin Tower United Methodist Church coordinate the meal service at both sites.
"They really do a tremendous job providing volunteers and seating," McKnight said. "This really helps make the event a success."
While staff members at Angela's are glad to offer the Christmas meal to the community, the holiday spirit stays with them throughout the year.
"This Dec. 25 meal is one way to give back," McKnight said, "and we're glad to host weekly fundraisers for local groups through our Mojito Monday Mojitos and Friday Night Flights for local charities, as well."
"This year's meal includes pasta, salad and ice cream from Tucker's, as well as a toy giveaway for kids," said Edward J. Therrien, a longtime Alameda resident who supports Angela's owner and chef Saboor Zafari with the event. "Alameda's been very good to Mr. Zafari, and he wants to give back," Therrien said.
Zafari isn't alone in his quest to reach out and share during the holidays.
"We have lots of local folks who volunteer to help at the event, which is surprising since we thought everyone would be busy on Christmas Day," Therrien said. "But even those with plenty of family members in Alameda help out at the event, which makes it very special."
