Happy first anniversary to Friends of the Alameda Animal Shelter (FAAS)! The nonprofit assumed responsibility for the shelter on Jan. 1, 2012, and began caring for and adopting out our city's homeless animals starting on day one.
During the year, FAAS made great progress in providing the abandoned pets in Alameda with the best care possible and giving them a second chance for a great new life. More than 450 abandoned animals found new homes (a 21 percent increase over 2011), 229 lost pets were returned to their owners and new programs were started to help the people and pets in our community.
The animal shelter successes of 2012 are possible because of the dedicated staff and board, the 5,000 hours of volunteer support received and generous financial support from the community. Several hundred individuals and businesses gave contributions, small and large, to keep the shelter going and to save animal lives. One of the long-term supporters of the Alameda Animal Shelter is the Humane Society of Alameda (HSOA). This organization provides a variety of support services for pet owners in the East Bay, and it purchases food and pet products for the Alameda Animal Shelter. For example, in 2012 HSOA provided temporary leashes, hand sanitizers, pet food, assisted with vet bills and bought some major appliances.
In 2013, FAAS is committed to continue providing the very best possible care for the animals in the shelter and to help pet owners with information and other resources. In the month of January, the following events are planned.
