El Cerrito forum airs state senate candidate views

Four contenders are seeking election in November to the District 9 seat being vacated by Loni Hancock that serves the area west of the East Bay hills from San Leandro on the south to Rodeo on the north and includes Oakland, Berkeley and Richmond. 
The Sunol-Ohlone Regional Wilderness will celebrate the season with its annual Spring Wildflower Festival, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday. There's also a 2-mile wildflower walk from 2 to 4:30 p.m. April 10 at Tilden Nature Area near Berkeley, guided by naturalist Trent Pearce.

The Recreation and Community Services Department has also announced several classes for spring break.

The restored Flecto Carousel was formally opened to the public Saturday. Ken and Carol -- who, by the way, will celebrate their 65th anniversary this summer -- and many members of the extended family flew here for the occasion, including their daughter, Janet, who came all the way from Northampton, Massachusetts.  
 
The public can have an active role in tracking the spread of sudden oak death, which threatens some of the state's most attractive native trees, during the annual citizen-science survey this month.
