Gauchos knock off Pride The El Cerrito High football team took a 14-0 lead in the second quarter and didn't look back in a 42-6 victory over Salesian on Sept. 28. It was the third straight team that has suffered its first loss of the season in the hands of the Gauchos. Quarterback Keilan Benjamin threw four touchdown passes, including two to Jalen Harvey and a 54-yard catch-and-run by Marcellus Pippins. That touchdown gave the host Gauchos (6-0, 2-0 Tri-County Athletic League Rock Division) a 13-0 lead over the Pride (5-1, 1-1).
BOD relies on rushing, defense in win With its top two quarterbacks unavailable due to injury, Bishop O'Dowd High received 111 yards and two touchdowns rushing by Bryce Grandison and limited host Arroyo to 133 yards of offense and six first downs in a 21-7 victory on Sept. 29. The game was tied at seven entering the fourth quarter before a long Dragons drive ended with a 10-yard Grandison TD run. Teammate Wayne Thomas returned an interception 41 yards for the game's final touchdown. Bishop O'Dowd improved to 4-1, while Arroyo fell to 2-3.
On deck Bishop O'Dowd at Encinal, football, Oct. 5, 7 p.m. -- A couple of defending league champions collide in the West Alameda County Conference Foothill Division opener for both teams. Berkeley vs. Hayward at Sunset Field, football, Oct. 5, 7 p.m. -- The Yellowjackets will be looking for their first victory this season in their WAAC-Foothill opener.
Stars of the week Keilan Benjamin, El Cerrito football -- Benjamin completed nine of 14 passes for 170 yards and four touchdowns as the Gauchos defeated Salesian 42-6 on Sept. 28. Kyra Holt, Albany girls volleyball -- Holt slammed 14 kills and had seven digs in a 25-14, 25-19, 25-16 victory over St. Patrick-St. Vincent on Sept. 25. She also had 17 kills, two blocks and three digs in a 25-17, 25-17, 25-13 victory over St. Joseph Notre Dame on Sept. 27. Kim Avalos, St. Joseph Notre Dame girls cross country -- Avalos placed second in the Division V race at the Stanford Invitational on Sept. 29 with a time of 19 minutes, 56 seconds for the 3.1 mile race at Stanford Golf Course. Chris Bussey, Alameda football -- Bussey caught seven passes for 78 yards, including a 13-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter, in the Hornets' 22-15 loss to Encinal on Sept. 28. Tyrell Carrigan, Encinal football -- Carrigan scored the winning touchdown in the Island Bowl on a 97-yard run with 55 seconds remaining for a 22-15 Encinal win. Carrigan had 106 yards rushing in the game. Emma Eppley, College Prep girls volleyball -- Eppley slammed 14 kills and also had six digs and two aces in a 25-22, 28-26, 25-18 victory over Valley Christian on Sept. 27. She also had 12 kills, seven digs and four aces in a 25-21, 25-22, 25-11 nonleague victory over Berean Christian on Sept. 25. Bryce Grandison, Bishop O'Dowd football -- Grandison rushed for 111 yards and two touchdowns, including the eventual game-winner in the fourth quarter, in the Dragons' 21-7 victory over Arroyo on Sept. 29. James Lewis, Oakland Tech football -- Lewis rushed for 109 yards and three touchdowns, including the last touchdown of the game in the fourth quarter, and also passed for 129 yards in the Bulldogs' 29-28 victory over Benicia on Sept. 28.
