Headed to college Alameda High, St. Joseph Notre Dame, and the Albany/Berkeley area all had athletes who signed recent national letters-of-intent. Alameda girls basketball player Marie Bertholdt signed with Santa Clara, and the Hornets' Jesse Lewis will play baseball at UC San Diego. St. Joseph Notre Dame girls basketball player Desiree Harris is headed to Colorado, and the Pilots' Phoebe Grunt will play women's volleyball at UC Santa Barbara. St. Mary's Kevin Flemer and Albany's Kyra Holt are both headed to Pac-12 schools -- Flemer (Oregon State) for baseball and Holt (Washington State) for women's volleyball.
Historic day for Tech The Oakland Tech boys cross country team won its first Oakland Section team title in the school's history on Nov. 14. The Bulldogs produced a score of 33 to edge Skyline by five points and qualify for the California Interscholastic Federation state championships. Tech's Adam Gardere Jr. won the race with a time of 20 minutes, 12.42 seconds for the extremely hilly 3.05 mile Joaquin Miller Park course. Oakland Tech also won the girls team and individual titles. Leila Rad was first in the race (25:02.33) and Tech had an excellent team score of 19.

Friedel, O'Dowd duo win NCS tennis titles College Prep's Jenna Friedel and the Bishop O'Dowd doubles team of Yasmine McCroden and Jenna DeTurk won North Coast Section Division II tennis titles on Nov. 14. Friedel, the No. 1 seed, didn't drop a set in the tournament and defeated Adrienne Sturgis of St. Patrick-St. Vincent 6-2, 6-1 in the final. McCroden and DeTurk, who were unseeded, dropped only seven games in their three tournament matches and beat Ishani Synghal and Kira Wang of College Prep 6-1, 6-1 in the final.
On deck Analy at El Cerrito at De Anza High, football, Nov. 23, 7 p.m. -- The undefeated Gauchos have allowed only 15 points in a pair of North Coast Section Division III playoff games entering this semifinal matchup. California Interscholastic Federation state championships, cross country, Nov. 24, 8:30 a.m. -- The best high school cross country runners in the state will converge on Woodward Park in Fresno for championship races in five divisions. The Division V boys race kicks off the meet at 8:30 a.m.; the Division IV girls race at 1:20 p.m. ends the meet.
Stars of the week Tariku Abdo, Berkeley boys cross country -- Abdo, a sophomore, won the NCS Division I race by 12 seconds with a time of 15:48 seconds for the 3.0 mile course at Hayward High. Allison Chuang, Albany girls tennis -- Chuang won the first NCS girls singles title in school history with a 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory over defending champion Stephanie Lin of Pinole Valley in the Division I final on Nov. 14. Spencer Moore, St. Mary's girls cross country -- Moore placed third in the Division IV race (19:31) to lead her squad to a second-place finish and a spot in the CIF Division IV state championship race. Tyrell Carrigan, Encinal football -- Carrigan rushed for 77 yards on eight carries, including a 20-yard touchdown, in the Jets' 40-14 loss to Cardinal Newman on Nov. 17 in a North Coast Section Division III quarterfinal game. Jenna Friedel, College Prep girls tennis -- Friedel won the NCS Division II singles title with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over St. Patrick-St. Vincent's Adrienne Sturgis 6-2, 6-1 on Nov. 14. Julian Frost, Piedmont boys cross country -- Frost qualified for the CIF state championships with a fourth-place finish in the NCS Division IV championship race. His time was 16:23 for the 3.0 mile Hayward High course.
