Donation provides free youth flu shots
The pharmacies in the Target stores at 1057 Eastshore Highway in Albany (510-982-0513), 1400 Fitzgerald Drive in Pinole (510-222-9281) and 4500 Macdonald Ave. in Richmond (510-253-1001) are among the locations where families can take children age 4 through 18 for a free flu vaccination now through Dec. 31.
The vaccinations offered by the Shoo the Flu campaign were made possible through a donation by the Page Family Foundation set up by Google co-founder Larry Page and his wife, Lucy.
Health officials recommend that everyone 6 months and older get a flu vaccine each year.
Free vaccinations are available at all Bay Area Target stores. For more details visit shootheflu.org.
In addition, health immunization clinics in Contra Costa County offer a reduced cost or free vaccine for children 6 months and older and adults. "The fee is $15 per child or adult but can be waived for any reason," according to Contra Costa Health Services.

Workshop on making Albany streets safer
Albany is hosting its Complete Streets Community Walk and Design Workshop from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Dec. 8. The walk will start at San Pablo Avenue and Buchanan Street, with discussion in the multipurpose room at Ocean View Elementary School, 1000 Jackson St.
The session is a follow-up to an introductory presentation held Thursday on ways to make San Pablo Avenue and Buchanan Street "easier and safer to walk, bike, ride the bus, and drive along."
Walkable communities expert Dan Burden will lead the event and a team led by Nelson\Nygaard Consulting Associates "will help translate your input into detailed designs that balance the needs of all modes and users of all ages and abilities."
Children are welcome and food and refreshments will be provided.
Adult school offers holiday arts and crafts
A Holiday Arts and Crafts Sale will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Dec. 14 at the West Contra Costa Adult School Serra Campus at 6028 Ralston Ave. in Richmond.
Find handmade gifts and goodies, make your won gifts and take part in the holiday basket raffle.
Proceeds benefit the adult school's fine arts and senior center programs.
Albany Lions host Breakfast with Santa
Elementary school children up through fifth grade get a free picture with Santa Claus at the Albany Lions Club annual Breakfast with Santa from 8 to 11 a.m. Dec. 8 at the Community Center, 1249 Marin Ave.
Breakfast includes pancakes, sausage, bacon, orange juice, coffee, and hot chocolate and donations are welcome for adults. Attendees are encouraged to bring a new, unwrapped toy for the Toys for Tots donation drive by the Albany Fire Department.

Learn the ropes of Medicare options
"Welcome to Medicare" is an introductory overview from 2 to 4:30 p.m. Dec. 12 on Medicare benefits, prescription medication coverage, Medicare Advantage plans HMO's, Medicare Supplemental insurance and will discuss how Medicare coordinates with employee, retiree, veterans and union benefits.
The free monthly overview will be hosted by the Contra Costa County Health Insurance Counseling and Advocacy Program (HICAP) at the West Contra Costa Adult Education Center Alvarado Campus, 5625 Sutter Ave. in Richmond.

Santa Claus will visit at annual breakfast
El Cerrito's annual Holiday Breakfast and Scholarship Fundraiser, from 9 to 11 a.m. Dec. 8 at the Community Center, 7007 Moeser Lane, will include breakfast, a visit from Santa Claus, songs by children in the city's preschool and after school/child care programs and a holiday variety show by the ClownSnotBombs Circus.
