Kendall Smith scored a tournament record 48 points as the Deer Valley High boys basketball team downed Sacramento 97-96 in a double-overtime thriller Saturday in the feature game of the NorCal Tip-Off Classic at Newark Memorial High.
Deer Valley (2-0) was down 91-86 with 10.7 seconds left but got a 3-pointer from Smith with 6.6 seconds to go. Then the 6-foot-3 senior point guard banked in a runner in the lane as time expired in the first overtime.
Smith, who was named the player of the game, scored 15 points in overtime. Teammate Marcus Lee, who is signed with Kentucky, finished with 22 points.
In the second overtime, Sacramento took a 96-95 lead on a layup by De'Von Boyd with just under a minute left. But, after a couple of turnovers by both teams, Deer Valley struck with Smith again.
Smith got a steal at midcourt, drove to the hoop and converted a layup with 11 seconds left that gave Deer Valley a 97-96 lead with two seconds to go.
Newark Memorial 60, Castro Valley 53: The Cougars' Sultan Siddiq hit six 3-pointers and finished with 22 points in the NorCal Tip-Off Classic. Siddiq, who hit a trio of 3-pointers in the second quarter, was named player of the game for host Newark Memorial (1-0).
The Trojans (0-1) had a 33-32 lead after the first half, which featured nine lead changes. But in the third quarter, the Cougars held the Trojans to just seven points and two field goals. Newark

Heritage 66, McNair-Stockton 48: The Patriots (1-0) took a 20-point lead at halftime and never looked back in a victory over McNair (0-1) at the NorCal Tip-Off Classic.
Three players scored in double figures for Heritage, which was led by Pierre Carter's 10 points and nine rebounds. George Johnson added 11 points, and Aaron Berry added 13 points for the Patriots, who led 35-15 after two quarters.
Dublin 75, Freedom 63: Joe McGlaston scored 31 points and added nine rebounds to lead the Gaels (1-0) past the Falcons in the opener at the NorCal Tip-Off Classic. Eric Nielsen added 10 points and 10 rebounds for Dublin, which took a 39-32 lead at halftime.
Elliot Smith had 21 points and 10 rebounds to lead Freedom (0-1), Tim Jordan added 10 rebounds and nine points and James O'Neal added 16 points, which included three 3-pointers.
El Cerrito 79, Miramonte 53: What was a close game at halftime turned into a blowout win for the Gauchos (1-0) at the NorCal Tip-Off Classic. El Cerrito led 34-33 at halftime but outscored Miramonte 25-8 in the fourth quarter to earn the victory.
Three players scored in double figures for the Gauchos, including Jovante Carleton, who had 19 points and nine rebounds. Blake Rayford added 17 and Rae Jackson had 13.
Kiran Shastri led Miramonte (0-1) with 23 points, including two 3-pointers.
