Redwood City teacher found in ravine died of natural causes, county coroner says

A Redwood City man found dead in a ravine near Crystal Springs Reservoir last month died of natural causes, according to the San Mateo County Coroner's Office.

Christopher Ryan, 54, was an English and social science teacher at James Logan High School in Union City. His family reported him missing on the morning of Oct. 10, according to the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office. A deputy found Ryan's black Acura sedan later that night in a parking area off Interstate 280 and Highway 92 and a search and rescue team found his body the next day in a nearby ravine, according to the sheriff's office.

Ryan died of natural causes related to heart disease, Supervising Deputy Coroner Michelle Rippy said Tuesday. Toxicology tests revealed no evidence of drugs or alcohol and Ryan's body showed no traumatic injuries that would indicate a fall, injury or involvement by another person, Rippy said.

The spot where Ryan was found "is the type of area you can go and walk around," Detective Rebecca Rosenblatt said.
