NEWARK -- Kathy Perscheid pitched a four-hitter as the Arroyo High softball team advanced to the North Coast Section Division II semifinals with a 6-2, second round win over host Newark Memorial on Friday.
"Our defense has been playing great lately and they really make it easier for me out there," Perscheid said. "This is probably one of the best games we've played as a team all season."
The sixth-seeded Dons will take on No. 2 Carondelet on Wednesday at Oak Grove Middle School in Concord. The victory also marks the first time since 2000 that Arroyo has advanced to the section semifinals. That year, the Dons fell to Benicia 5-0 in the 3A semifinals.
Perscheid gave up three hits in the first three innings when the Cougars took a 2-1 lead, but settled down and finished with just one walk to go along with six strikeouts.
The Dons (19-7) scored four runs in the sixth inning to break a 2-2 tie as Alisya Valdovinos (3 for 4) singled home Perscheid, and Brianna Martinez added a run-scoring single. Shayne Buac then added some insurance with a two-run double to cap the Dons' rally.
The Cougars (19-7) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first, as Desiree Herrera singled, stole second and scored on freshman Jiana Rojo's base-hit. After the Dons tied it on a Melissa Barraza single, Newark jumped back out in front in the third when Yvette Ocegueda's bunt brought home Caitlin Soriano.
