UNION CITY -- Tayler Peters and Kristen Kowaki provided the key hits as the James Logan High softball team found its offensive groove in the later innings to beat No. 7 seeded San Ramon Valley 5-2 on Friday in the North Coast Section Division I quarterfinals.
No. 2 Logan (23-2) needed to overcome a 1-0 deficit in the fifth inning to record its 18th consecutive victory.
After Peyton Riccio broke a scoreless tie with an RBI groundout in the top half of the fifth, Peters delivered for the Colts with the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom part of the inning.
The senior shortstop hit a shallow fly ball just out of reach of the Wolves' right fielder. It dropped for a two-run single and gave Logan the lead for good.
Peters' hit was just the Colts' fourth of the afternoon off San Ramon Valley's Courtney Kezerian, a crafty left-hander who pitched a shutout in the Wolves' playoff opener and had allowed just one run in three outings heading into the postseason.
"She has a weird spin (on the ball) so we had to adjust," Peters said. "It took us the first round of at-bats and then we finally got it."
Logan added some insurance in the sixth with Kowaki's two-run triple and a sacrifice fly from Julissa Patino.
Trailing 5-1 entering the seventh, San Ramon Valley (17-9) rallied for one more run when Taylor Wickman tripled and Riccio drove her home with a single.
Now Logan is a win away from reaching the NCS Division I championship game for a fifth consecutive season. The two-time defending champions host the winner of Saturday's game between Granada and Santa Rosa in Tuesday's semifinals.
"It's hard because a lot of people expect a lot from us," Peters said. "We have to live up to that, but that kind of pushes us to keep winning like this."
Allison Pelland earned the win for Logan, allowing eight hits and one earned run. Kezerian struck out eight and allowed six hits.
