NEWARK — What began as a traffic stop early Friday ended with the arrest of two men who apparently had been involved in an overnight drive-by shooting, authorities said.
The two men — one from Newark, the other from San Leandro — were being held on suspicion of several felony charges in connection with shots were fired at a home on St. Matthew Drive in Newark sometime earlier.
No one was hurt in the shooting, although police said one bullet traveled through one wall and became embedded in a second wall.
Police identified the suspects as Samuel Fox of Newark and Angelo Vincent Roberto of San Leandro, both 20. They were arrested about 2 a.m. on suspicion of weapons charges after they admitted being involved in the shooting, police said.
It was unclear Friday when the men would appear in court.
The arrests happened after Newark police Officer Pat Smith, a K-9 handler, saw a vehicle speeding in the area of Ash Street and Wells Avenue, Lt. Donna Shearn said.
When he stopped the vehicle, Smith questioned the occupants and later searched the vehicle, ultimately finding several .45 caliber shells and a map to a home on nearby St. Matthew Drive.
When officers went to the home shown on the map, they found a .45-caliber gun and several spent shells lying on the street.
Minutes later, they received word from the home's occupants that the house had been fired upon, but no one was hurt.
