How much violence is acceptable level?

I was watching the news and saw that the 30th homicide in San Jose caused a letter from an assemblywoman to the police chief of San Jose that stated violence is "spiraling out of control."

As I write, there have been 78 homicides in Oakland.

How much does it take for violence in Oakland to "spiral out of control" -- or what level is it just acceptable?

Must refuse to accept shootings and guns

On Aug. 15, I was shot in the leg. I was walking my bicycle into my front yard at the time.

The shooter never told me he was armed, never said he would shoot me.

He had four other men to back him up. With their help, he could easily have restrained me and stolen my personal property without the gun.

What did pulling the trigger do for either of us? I can no longer walk without assistance.

He stole a bag of my dirty laundry.

Neither benefited.

I was unarmed and will remain unarmed. Violence does not help us, our families or our neighborhood.

We cannot continue to live with such inhumanity in our midst.

It is not just for the shooter to put down his gun, but for us as neighbors to refuse to accept shootings and guns as a part of our communities.

If I had been carrying my own pistol, I expect that I would be dead right now -- with five bullets in me instead of one.

The shooter ran from the scene with my dirty laundry. Neither of us got what we wanted.

Building a better world is hard work. It is much easier if we work together.

Should take care of our own first

This is regarding the Aug. 14 article, "Relief for immigrants."

What about relief for senior citizens on fixed incomes?

What about relief for a small business that is trying to hang on in this terrible economy?

What about relief for our own people who are homeless and have lost their jobs?

Also, Medicare is cutting funds to hospitals and doctors. Are we going to have our streets full of homeless and sick people?

This is not the vision I had for my senior years as a citizen of this country. I think all of us citizens deserve better.

Let the countries where these people come from take care of them. We have many problems of our own to take care of.

Haters never let facts get in way

An Aug. 15 letter showed a skewed Middle East reality, and ignored essential facts:

Israel occupied the West Bank after repelling an attack by Jordan, which occupied the West Bank since 1948.

From 1967 to 1994, Arabs of the West Bank had an annual 7 percent economic growth; after the Palestinian Authority began its rule of terror, GDP plummeted -- not because of Israel.

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, whose term expired January 2009, was (per Abu Daoud) the source of funding for the 1972 Munich Olympic massacre of Israeli athletes.

The Palestinian Authority has received billions of dollars of aid, most being pocketed by corrupt leadership, the squalor of whose populous is planned manipulation.

Gaza is ruled by the Islamist Hamas government, where women are second-class citizens, and being an LGBT is a capital offense.

Schools teach children to aspire to murder Israelis. Those who murder Jews are idolized and have parks named after them.

As one again sees, those who hate never let verifiable facts get in the way of that hate.
