Margaret Chaika, a certified respiratory therapist and certified pulmonary function technologist at Washington Hospital in Fremont, has been honored as the American Association for Respiratory Care's 2008 Continuing Care and Rehabilitation Section Specialty Practitioner of the Year.

Chaika, singled out from 100,000 practicing respiratory therapists, was one of a group of nine therapists honored nationwide, the only one from California.

The award, bestowed annually on a section member who best exemplifies excellence in providing respiratory care services to patients in need of pulmonary rehabilitation and asthma education, was presented to Chaika at the group's 54th International Respiratory Congress in Anaheim.

She also was honored at a recent meeting of the Washington Township Health Care District Board of Directors.

Chaika, who has been a respiratory therapist for more than 35 years, said, "Receiving a prestigious award from colleagues in the field of pulmonary rehabilitation is a great honor."

    Army Pfc. Sheetal G. Patel and Army Pvt. Matthew R. McLeod have graduated from nine weeks of basic training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C.

    Patel is the daughter of Suryakant Patel of Fremont.

    McLeod id the son of Cheryl Kleppan of Dewey, Ariz., and Ronald McLeod of Fremont. The private is a 2004 graduate of Washington High School.

    Navy Seaman Apprentice Jose A. Soria Avila recently was promoted to his current rank upon graduation from recruit training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill. He received the early promotion for outstanding performance during all phases of the training cycle.

    The seaman is the son of Maria Soria, and Fernando Avila, both of Fremont. Soria Avila is a 2007 graduate of American High School.

    Marine Pfc. Kate Flaherty recently completed 12 weeks of basic training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, S.C. Her parents, Jim and Barbara Flaherty, traveled from Fremont to Parris Island for their daughter's graduation ceremony.

    Flaherty is stationed at Camp Lejeune (near Jacksonville, N.C.) for four weeks of combat training, then will begin technical training at Marine Air Ground Task Force Training Command at Twentynine Palms, in Southern California.

    Flaherty is a 2006 graduate of American High School.
