UNION CITY — A mother of two young boys was recovering Tuesday after being shot multiple times during a squabble with her husband, who later was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, police said.
Both children, ages 1 and 2, were home during the shooting, but neither was hurt, Lt. Kelly Musgrove said.
"One of the boys was shaking — literally shaking," Musgrove said. "He knew what happened."
The 25-year-old mother was shot several times below the waist and underwent surgery Tuesday afternoon. Her condition was not released, but she was said to be stable, Musgrove said. Because of the location of her injuries, police said she is expected to survive.
Meanwhile, investigators were questioning 26-year-old husband Angel James Mendez, whom they arrested in connection with the shooting. What prompted the incident was still unclear, Musgrove said.
Police first received a call about 8:45 a.m. from a dwelling at the Kennedy Apartments on Kennedy Avenue, but the caller didn't say anything and hung up, the lieutenant said. Seconds later, someone else called to report hearing gunshots in an apartment at the complex.
When officers arrived, they found the mother bleeding in the apartment and still arguing with her husband, said Musgrove, who was one of the first officers on scene.
The woman was stabilized and transported to a trauma center.
Police said Mendez's mother and the two boys were home when the shooting occurred, although it was unclear if they witnessed it.
Police summoned counselors to the scene to console the boys.
Police arrested Mendez on a host of felonies, including attempted murder. He was booked into Santa Rita Jail in Dublin and could be arraigned as early as today.
