students win scholarships: Fremont graduates Saloni Shah, Ariela Koehler and David Lau recently won $11,000 each in scholarships from the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum Foundation.
Shah graduated from Washington High with a 3.976 grade-point average and 2180 SAT score. She was active in community service and speech-and-debate. She plans to study biochemistry and cell biology at the University of California, San Diego.
Koehler graduated Irvington High with a 3.88 grade-point average and a 2230 SAT score. She was involved in community service and at Temple Beth Torah. She plans to study molecular and cellular biology at the University of California, Berkeley.
Lau, an Irvington graduate, earned a 3.948 grade-point average and a score of 2340 on the SAT. He was on the school's swim team and participated in a number of community service projects. He plans to study economics at a University of California campus.
In addition to the Fremont scholars, a student at James Logan High School in Union City, Hang Tran, received a $1,000 scholarship from Burger King. The award was based on grades, work experience, financial need, extracurricular activities and community service.
Tran also won a $1,000 scholarship from Palpung Lungtok Choeling, a Buddhist organization in San Jose. Other Palpung scholarship recipients were Aridai Tapia of Hayward, Lizi Feng of San Leandro
Fremont
mission san jose students conduct research: Mission San Jose High School students Nathan Ellebracht, Tanu Patel, David Xu and Zhejun Zhou participated in the University of California, Davis's Young Scholars Program during the summer.
They joined 36 other high-achieving high school students in conducting research related to the fields of biological and natural sciences. During the six-week program, students attended lectures, worked one-on-one in state-of-the-art laboratories with UC Davis faculty and wrote major research papers.

High schools collecting copier paper: Individuals who would like to participate in National Day of Service and Remembrance, on the anniversary of 9/11, may donate reams of copier paper to James Logan or Conley-Caraballo high schools.
Logan is at 1800 H St., Union City. Conley-Caraballo is at 541 Blanche St., Hayward.
The drive was organized by Karen Yifru in memory of her son, Biniam Yifru, who died shortly after graduating in 2007.
