back to school: Back-to-School Nights are scheduled at various elementary schools in Fremont on Tuesday and Sept. 22; at Centerville, Thornton and Walters junior high schools on Wednesday; and at Washington High on Thursday and American High on Sept. 24.

Superintendent meeting: Superintendent Milt Werner's next monthly community meeting will take place 10 to 11:15 a.m. Monday in Fukaya Room A of the Fremont Main Library.

Although the meeting will focus on issues facing the American High School attendance area, the public may raise questions of concern to the general schools community.

Each meeting will focus on a different attendance area. The Oct. 12 meeting will focus on the Irvington High area. For information, call 510-659-2594.

Irvington green fair: The public is invited to Irvington High School's first green fair from 12:30 to 5 p.m. Sept. 19.

The free event will feature music, Segway rides, e-waste collection,

sneaker and cartridge recycling, bicycle tuneups, information booths and a raffle drawing to win a Toyota Prius. Raffle tickets are $20. Environmental clubs from local high schools also will be present.

The fair will coincide with a creek cleanup near the school, which was organized as part of the California Coastal Cleanup Day.

Irvington High has won a state "Flex Your Power" award for reducing its energy consumption, a national Energy Star award and, in June, took home the "America's Greenest School" title in an online contest.

Montessori marks 35 years: Montessori Schools of Fremont is celebrating its 35th anniversary this year.

It started as a preschool operating out of a rented Sunday school classroom in 1974. Today, it operates five schools in the Tri-City area.

This year, it expanded its elementary school program by 40 percent and opened a new campus for Alsion Montessori Middle/High School next to Ohlone College.

health services: Students of James Logan and Conley-Caraballo high school who are on Medi-Cal are eligible for free mental health services provided by Tiburcio Vasquez Health Center.

special education meetings: Parents who would like to learn more about special education services may attend any of a series of meetings held the third Wednesday of each month, except December, during the school year, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the district office, 34200 Alvarado-Niles Road.

Topics include special education laws, positive individualized education plan meetings, social skills, sensory integration, behavior at home and communication.
