Former Fremont resident Stephen N. Bauer has been inaugurated as the 31st president of the College of American Pathologists.
The Oct. 10 inauguration took place at the Gaylord National Hotel in National Harbor, Md., and was followed by a black-tie gala dinner and dance celebrating his inauguration.
Bauer, a resident of Sacramento, graduated from Washington High School in 1967. After graduating from UC Davis, he attended and graduated from medical school at UC San Francisco.
Bauer comes from a medical family. His father, Edward G. Bauer, was the first pediatrician to practice in Fremont.
Three local firefighters were honored during the annual Newark Optimist Club's Firefighter of the Year breakfast ceremony.
Ernie Morua, of Newark; Mark Hogan, of Fremont; and Jason Cartee, of Union City, each were selected by their peers within their respective fire departments to receive the award.
Each was recognized and received a plaque during the Oct. 14 ceremony at the IHOP on Jarvis Avenue in Newark.
Each October, the Optimist club, which is comprised of 50 people whose goal is to better the future of local youth, celebrates the efforts of local firefighters.

A member of La Parfait Union, Lodge No. 17, San Francisco, Farjas was recognized for his willingness to share his culinary expertise with his brothers in the lodge and the community.
Farjas, drawn to Masonry because of its emphasis on philanthropy, currently runs more than 25 charitable events throughout the year.
The Kiwanis Club of Fremont installed new board members for 2009-10. Andrea Fleekop, director of education at Temple Beth Torah in Fremont, has been granted the prestigious title of Reform Jewish Educator by the Reform Jewish Educator Title Granting Commission.
The title is given to educators who have fulfilled stringent academic requirements in the areas of education, educational administration and Judaic studies, as well as three years of professional experience as a full-time Jewish educational leader in a Reform congregation.
Army Pvt. Arcelia L. Buenrostro has graduated from nine weeks of basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C.
Buenrostro is the daughter of Martha Garcia, of Milpitas, and Miguel Buenrostro, of Hayward.
The private is a 2007 graduate of Union City Christian Academy.
Army Pvt. Jojie B. Fujikawa has graduated from One Station Unit Training at Fort Knox, Ky., which included both basic combat training and advanced individual training.
Fujikawa earned distinction as an honor graduate of the course.
He is the son of Arnold and Mary Jane Manalac, of Union City.
The private graduated from James Logan High School in 2008.
