The Fremont/Newark YMCA honored Fremont Bank's Brian Hughes as its Volunteer of the Year at the YMCA of the East Bay annual volunteer recognition dinner at Scott's Seafood in Oakland on Oct. 21.

Hughes serves as relationship officer for nonprofit agencies at Fremont Bank.

He is an ambassador and advocate for the YMCA, and is instrumental in promoting the YMCA in community-focused projects. He was influential in expanding the YMCA Kid City program at the 2009 Fremont Festival of the Arts.

Hughes' latest project is chairing for the 2010 annual Partners Campaign to raise funds to send children to YMCA summer camp and other programs for children and families.

    Fremont student Sean Pelton was named to the dean's honor lists for the fall semester 2008 and the spring semester 2009, at California Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks.

    Joshua Everett, a 17-year-old Hayward resident, is doing something unique for his Boy Scout Eagle project.

    He collected hundreds of dollars' worth of school supplies, and on Oct. 21 delivered individual packets of supplies to each student at Loren Eden Elementary School in Hayward (his alma mater). In addition, each teacher and classroom received extra supplies, as well the office staff.

    Everett is a recent graduate of Mount Eden High School, Hayward.

    has been accepted into the Peace Corps in Jordan. She departed Oct. 21 to begin a two-year assignment as an English teacher volunteer.

    McCloskey is a graduate of Germantown Friends School, Philadelphia, Penn., class of 1964. She received a bachelor's degree in English from Vassar College, Poughkeepsie, N.Y., in 1968.

    Peace Corps is a 27-month commitment. The first three months of her service will be training, living with a host family and studying Jordan's language and culture. She'll then begin her two-year assignment, living in the style of the people in her new community.

    Fremont student Sarah Sheikh is one of two recipients of Carnegie Mellon University's 2009 Alumni Association Student Service Awards.

    Sheikh, a senior majoring in business administration and political science on Carnegie Mellon's Pittsburgh campus, is recognized as an advocate for human rights both domestically and internationally.

    Sheikh has served as president of Amnesty International, and Mayur, the South Asian Student Association. In the summer of 2008, she was an education consultant for Sardar Bahadu Khan Women's University in Pakistan, where she delivered lectures on leadership and helped establish the university's first student newspaper.

    Sheikh is a student ambassador for Carnegie Mellon's Career Center and is involved in the University Student Advisory Council, Initiating Meaningful Pittsburgh and Qatar Transactions, Highland Ambassadors, Delta Gamma sorority and Greek Council.

    Matthew Domenech, Amber L. Buck and Brandon R. Amdahl have graduated from the Army ROTC (Reserve Officer Training Corps) Leader Development and Assessment Course, also known as "Operation Warrior Forge," at Fort Lewis, Tacoma, Wash.

    Cadets in their junior and senior year of college must complete the leadership development course. Upon successful completion of the course, the ROTC program and graduation from college, cadets are commissioned as second lieutenants in the U.S. Army, National Guard, or Reserve.

    Cadet Domenech is the son of Mauricio and Maria Domenech, of Newark, and a 2006 graduate of Newark Memorial High School. He is a student at the University of San Francisco.

    Cadet Buck is the daughter of Greg and Gloria Buck, of Fremont. She is a student at the University of California, Davis.

    Cadet Amdahl is the son of Carl Amdahl, of Fremont, and Mari-Lynne Earls, of Seattle, Wash.

    Marine Corps Pfc. Monika A. Wamhoff recently graduated as an oboe instrumentalist from the 21-week Music Basic Course at the School of Music, Norfolk, Va. The course provides entry-level training to qualify soldiers, sailors and Marines for careers as military musicians in their respective services.

    On completion, graduates receive their bandsman designation and are assigned to their first fleet or field band in locations throughout the world and abroad.

    Wamhoff is a 2006 graduate of James Logan High School in Union City.

    Navy Seaman Apprentice Maurice I. Mahoney recently completed eight weeks of U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill.

    Mahoney is the son of Robert and Delesha Mahoney, of Hayward, and is a 2006 graduate of Mount Eden High School.

    Army Pfc. Eduardo G. Pedreira has graduated from the Direct Fire Infantryman One Station Unit Training at Fort Benning, Columbus, Ga. The training consists of basic combat training and advanced individual training.

    Pedreira is the son of Eddie and Leslie Pedreira, of Newark. The private is a 2007 graduate of Newark Memorial High School.

    David M. Trujillo has enlisted in the Moffett Federal Airfield, Mountain View, Air National Guard, a Reserve Component of the U.S. Air Force.

    The airman, a load master with four years of military service, is assigned to the 129th Rescue Wing.

    Trujillo is the son of David and Barbara Trujillo, of Fremont, and is a 2003 graduate of Irvington High School.
