COLLEGE INFORMATION NIGHT: Irvington High School will host an information night titled "The College Experience of the African American Student" from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday.
Speakers will include college representatives, local college students and members of the Historically Black College Coalition.
Topics that will be discussed include admissions criteria, financial aid, housing, athletics and the differences between community colleges and state universities.

Gang awareness: The Hayward school district and police department will hold a gang awareness presentation at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Cesar Chavez Middle School, 27845 Whitman St.
Parents and community members are invited to ask questions about gangs, youth violence and community resources. Topics include types of gangs, why kids join gangs, warning signs they may be in a gang, and gang prevention and intervention.

teacher of the year: Hayward High School music teacher and band director Bryan Holbrook was named one of two teachers of the year by the Alameda County Office of Education last month.

The county office gives the honor to two teachers each year to recognize excellence in classroom instruction.
Holbrook, who has been honored in the past as Hayward's teacher of the year, said his personal motto is PRIDE: Personal Responsibility in Delivering Excellence.

COMMUNITY FORUM: New Haven schools chief Kari McVeigh will hold a forum Wednesday with parents and community members to discuss the budget and work going on at each school.
The superintendent also will answer questions and listen to audience feedback.
The forum will begin at 7 p.m. at the district office, 34200 Alvarado-Niles Road, Union City.
VETERANS DAY: Students, staff and community members are encouraged to design Veterans Day cards, which will be delivered to veterans at local hospitals.
Cards should be dropped off at Searles Elementary by 3 p.m. Thursday.

DYSLEXIA WORKSHOP: A simulation workshop to help parents and educators understand what having dyslexia is like will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday at Stellar Academy for Dyslexics.
