A 19-year-old Newark man remained hospitalized Monday after being shot in the head Saturday night during an apparent gang-related incident on Mulberry Street in Newark, while another man also was recovering Monday after being shot six times in a separate incident in Fremont hours later.

The Newark man's exact condition was not released. He has shown some improvement, but remains in the intensive care unit at a hospital, Newark police Cmdr. Robert Douglas said.

Details about the case remained scant Monday as authorities still were trying to determine the motive for the shooting, Douglas said.

The incident occurred just before 10 p.m. Halloween night in the 36900 block of Mulberry, police said. No one else was hurt.

The victim was stabilized at the scene and transported by ambulance to a hospital.

Newark police have turned the investigation over to the Southern Alameda County Gang Violence Suppression Task Force.

That shooting happened just hours before a 21-year-old man was shot six times in Fremont during a home robbery.

The victim was hit in various parts of his body during a gunbattle with one of the robbers, but he is expected to live police, Sgt. Chris Mazzone said.

Police said Monday that they still were looking for a pair of gun-toting robbers who

entered an apartment on West Pickering Avenue near Mission Boulevard about 2 a.m. Sunday.

The robbers held as many as seven residents at bay with guns as they demanded money and other items.

While searching the rest of the home, one of the robbers engaged in a gunbattle with a resident who was in his bedroom.

The victim fired several shots during the exchange, but it was unclear if anyone else was hurt.

Both robbers fled without taking anything, the sergeant said. They were described as black men in their mid- to late 20s.

One was described as having dark-colored skin, standing more than 6 feet tall, and wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and black pants.

The other had lighter skin, stood about 5 feet 10 inches and wore a black T-shirt and baggy bluejeans.
