FREMONT — An East Bay Filipino organization and the Rotary Club are teaming to raise funds for victims of Typhoon Ondoy and subsequent storms that have wreaked havoc on the northern regions of the Philippines.
The groups have planned a "happy hour" of music, karaoke, hors d'oeuvres, no-host cocktails and a silent auction from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Friday at the Roxas Boulevard Comedy Club and Restaurant in Fremont. Tickets are $30 per person and may be purchased at the door.
Organizers hope to raise $5,000 through ticket sales and other donations.
Typhoon Ondoy slammed into the capital city of Manila on Sept. 26. That and subsequent storms have left more than 900 people dead. Bacteria-infested water has led to outbreaks of leptospirosis that have claimed the lives of at least 148 and sickened thousands more.
"The situation in the Philippines is getting worse by the minute. Hopefully people will open their wallets and help," said Elaine Wong-Bigel, one of the organizers.
Jim Navarro, a councilman in Union City, said reports from friends in the Philippines have been dismal.
"The word is 'destitute,'"" he said. "The government (there) is just reacting rather than acting. ... There's no organized evacuation plan. Hopefully that changes real soon because people are dying."
Friday's fundraiser is being sponsored by the Filipino Heritage Association of the East Bay and the Tri-City's Sunset Rotary Club.
