Veteran outfielder Bobby Abreu agreed Thursday to a $19 million, two-year contract to stay with the Los Angeles Angels rather than test the free-agent market again.
"I really feel happy here with Los Angeles," he said.
After earning $16 million with the New York Yankees in 2008, Abreu became a free agent. He didn't find a new job until Feb. 12, just before spring training, when the Angels gave him a one-year contract that guaranteed $5 million. He earned an additional $1 million based on plate appearances.
Abreu, 35, hit .293 with 15 homers, 103 RBI, 30 steals and 94 walks.
"He did a tremendous job for us last year, both on and off the field," Angels general manager Tony Reagins said.
Abreu's new contract includes a 2012 team option for $9 million with a $1 million buyout.
Free agency: A's infielders Adam Kennedy, Bobby Crosby and Nomar Garciaparra and pitcher Justin Duchscherer, and Giants infielder Juan Uribe, outfielder Randy Winn and pitchers Bobby Howry and Brad Penny were among 79 players who filed for free agency Thursday, the first possible day. Outfielders Matt Holliday and Jason Bay, first baseman Carlos Delgado and pitcher John Lackey also filed as did pitcher Jon Garland after the Los Angeles Dodgers declined his $10 million option. He will receive a $2.5 million buyout.
Trades: The Chicago White Sox agreed to trade second baseman Chris Getz and third baseman Josh Fields to Kansas
Dodgers: The wife of team owner Frank McCourt lost her bid to be reinstated as the team's chief executive during a hearing in the couple's messy divorce. Jamie McCourt, 55, was fired last month by her husband, who said she had an affair with her bodyguard and had done a poor job in the front office. Superior Court Commissioner Scott Gordon ruled no state law supports Jamie McCourt's bid to get her job back. But Gordon has yet to decide whether the Dodgers are considered community or separate property.
White Sox: Mark Kotsay, 33, agreed to a $1.5 million contract. The veteran first baseman/outfielder, who had been eligible for free agency, hit .278 with four homers and 23 RBI in 67 games with Boston and Chicago this season.
Braves: Tim Hudson, 34, and Atlanta are nearing agreement on a three-year contract. Atlanta holds a $12 million option on the former A's right-hander, who was 2-1 with a 3.61 ERA in seven starts this season after his return from elbow surgery.
Diamondbacks: Chad Tracy's $7 million option was declined by Arizona, who'll pay the infielder a $1 million buyout. Tracy, 29, becomes eligible for free agency. He hit .237 with eight home runs and 39 RBI in 2009.
Rangers: Clint Hurdle was named Texas' hitting coach. He takes over for Rudy Jaramillo, who turned down a one-year extension at the end of the season. Jaramillo then got a three-year deal to become hitting coach for the Chicago Cubs. Hurdle was Colorado's manager for seven-plus seasons before being fired in May. Before becoming manager, he was the team's hitting coach.
Rockies: Colorado agreed to one-year deals with pitchers Matt Belisle ($850,000) and Randy Flores ($650,000).
