OAKLAND -- The A's, as expected, activated outfielder Chris Young from the disabled list Saturday afternoon, moving Oakland one step closer to having a fully functioning outfield.
Young, who had been sidelined by a strained left quad injury, is the second outfielder in four days to come off the disabled list for the A's.
Wednesday saw the return of center fielder Coco Crisp, who had missed 15 days with a strained left hamstring. Young was in the starting lineup for the A's against the Royals Saturday night.
To make room on the roster for Young, who was hitting .172 at the time of his April 29 injury, the A's put first baseman Daric Barton on the designated for assignment list, meaning the club has 10 days to trade him, release him or sign him to a minor league contract if he clears waivers.
The moves mean that Brandon Moss, who has been playing right field with young and Josh Reddick (right wrist) unavailable, will go back to first base and Young will get the majority of time in right until Reddick returns.
Reddick is eligible to come off the DL on Wednesday, but it's unclear that timetable will hold. Manager Bob Melvin said before Saturday's game that Reddick is taking some "dry swings" (i.e., not hitting a ball) the last few days but that he has not been deemed ready to take batting practice.
This is the second time since March that Barton has been on the DFA list. He was not claimed the first time around, was resigned by the A's and was hitting .287 with 21 RBIs in 21 games with Triple-A Sacramento before being called up on May 8. Barton hit .143 with Oakland.
"His numbers don't show the quality of the at-bats he put together here,'' Melvin said, "or the defense he played here."
The A's are hoping he clears waivers and can be resigned, but Melvin pointed out that as all players want to be in the Major Leagues, they'd be happy to see another club pick him up and put him on the active roster.
This is the fifth time in five days the A's have made at least one roster move as the club is getting closer to getting its preferred roster back from the disabled list.
