SEATTLE — The A's had to make do without John Jaso as their catcher in the series finale against Oakland Sunday, but there is hope that he will be available when the A's return home to start a series against the Cincinnati Reds Tuesday.

Jaso said the palm of his left hand where he suffered an abrasion while sliding Thursday in Texas, is not causing him as much pain.

Manager Bob Melvin said Sunday's improvement was much more significant than the slight improvement Jaso had made from Friday to Saturday.

``He's better today, making more progress,'' the manager said. ``Maybe he's not good enough to start and play a whole game, but he but he might be available as a pinch-hitter at the back end of the game.''
