PHOENIX -- Right-handed reliever Ryan Cook may or may not be ready to start the season in the A's bullpen.

Manager Bob Melvin said Monday morning Cook, who has yet to throw a bullpen session off a mound this spring because of shoulder problems, could be cutting it close to be ready for the start of the season against Cleveland on March 31.

"It's going to be close as to (being ready) opening day," Melvin said.

Cook has been saying the shoulder stiffness is diminishing and has insisted he would be ready for the start of the season.

But three weeks into the seven-week spring it Is seemingly increasingly problematic.
