OAKLAND -- The A's lost first baseman Brandon Moss to what the team called a sprained left ankle on a weird looking at-bat in the eighth inning of Friday's game with the Blue Jays.

Moss, batting with men on first and second and one out in a scoreless game, hit a routine grounder to second base on which the Jays defense seemed to assume they would only get a force at second.

But the A's first baseman fell to his knees in the batter's box and never made it to first base, so the Jay were able to complete the slow developing double play. The trainer and manager Bob Melvin came to the plate to assist, and Moss was helped off the field.

He then headed to the A's clubhouse to be checked out.
