Oakland and San Leandro are on and Berkeley is off the route for a bus rapid transit plan headed for final environmental studies, the AC Transit Board decided unanimously Wednesday.

AC Transit had proposed a speedy bus service with bus-only lanes along part of the route through Berkeley, Oakland and San Leandro.

Berkeley opposed any bus-only lanes, citing fears of disrupting local parking and traffic flows. The city also wanted to convert some of the route from one-way to two-way streets.

Berkeley's position would have defeated the purpose of the project to provide speedier service, AC Transit managers said in a report concluding that Berkeley's preferences "would be detrimental to transit riders and efficient transit operations."

Oakland and San Leandro city councils endorsed local routes allowing bus-only lanes on part of the route.

AC Transit is scheduled in fall to release a project conceptual design and a final environment study.
