MORGAN HILL -- An assault suspect shot one man in the arm and hit another in the head with a hammer in unincorporated Morgan Hill early Thursday and authorities believe he may be fleeing to Mexico, the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office said.

Sheriff's deputies were called just after 3 a.m. to the area of Peebles Avenue and Calle Moniz after getting reports that a 45-year-old man had been shot and a 25-year-old man had been injured in a hammer attack. The suspect, identified as 33-year-old Mario Calderon, had already fled the scene, according to the Sheriff's Office.

Both victims are expected to survive their injuries. Sheriff's spokesman Sgt. Jose Cardoza said the suspect and victims knew each other but the extent of the relationship, and a motive for the attack, remained unclear.

Calderon is 5-foot-6, weighs 180 pounds and has a shaved head. He was driving a white 1994 Acura Integra with the California license plate 6VDL974. Witnesses told investigators they believe he is headed to Mexico and should be considered armed and dangerous.
