HALF MOON BAY -- Mavericks Invitational on Thursday announced a major sponsorship with cameramaker GoPro and a new opening date for the big-wave surfing contest.
GoPro makes cameras that can be worn by people engaged in various sports, from mountain biking to hang gliding. The San Mateo-based company signed a two-year lead sponsorship deal, said Mavericks contest director Jeff Clark.
Mavericks has rescheduled the opening of the window for the contest to Nov. 9, when surfers participating in the competition will gather for an opening ceremony and paddle out into the waves to hold a prayer circle.
The contest will run sometime between Nov. 9 and March 31, provided the right surfing conditions arise.
