SAN JOSE -- A man charged with murdering his wife by fatally burning her in April entered a not guilty plea in court Wednesday, according to the Santa Clara County District Attorney's Office.

Police and fire personnel were conducting a welfare check in the first block of South Second Street around 11:45 p.m. on April 16 when they found Patricia Storey, 64, on the ground, severely burned.

Story was taken to the hospital but died the following day, police said.

The police investigation led detectives to Story's husband Barton Williams, 49, a transient, who was arrested in St. James Park on April 18.

Williams is being represented by an attorney from the Office of the Public Defender, according to Deputy District Attorney Dan Fehderau.

He is scheduled to appear in court again on Feb. 14 for a preliminary hearing, Fehderau said.
