BERKELEY -- Police are searching for a woman who pepper-sprayed another woman on Durant Avenue on Wednesday and then tried to steal her purse.

The 20-year-old victim told police that she was walking in the 2200 block of the street about 6:10 p.m. when the woman and a man confronted her.

The woman pepper-sprayed her, the victim said, and attempted to take her purse. But she was able to hold onto it during the struggle and both suspects fled, possibly in a white vehicle.

Officers did not find anyone matching the description of the suspects when they searched the neighborhood, police said.

The victim described the female suspect as a black woman about 23 years old, 5-foot-4, with a heavy build. Her black hair was styled in a bun and she was wearing a yellow shirt and jeans.

The victim could not provide a detailed description about the man who accompanied the woman, saying he was about 23 years old, stands about 6-foot-4, with a thin build.
