HAYWARD -- The Eden Area YMCA is getting a new playground, thanks to about 250 volunteers and a partnership with two corporate sponsors.

With the help of "a ton of people," the playground will be built in six hours on March 22, said Kelly O'Lague Dulka of the YMCA of the East Bay.

The old playground was removed about a year and a half ago because it wasn't safe, Dulka said.

The new playground's design is based on drawings by children who took part in a Design Day at the Y in January. It will be used by about 750 youngsters.

Shutterfly will be sending 100 volunteers, and the Y recruited another 150 from the community. Representatives of KaBOOM, a nonprofit agency dedicated to building playgrounds, will oversee the work.

The YMCA is located at 951 Palisades St. The Y runs sports programs and camps there, in addition to an infant toddler center. The campus also houses Golden Oak Montessori charter school.

Shutterfly Foundation provided most of the funds for the project, with the Y supplying the rest.
