SAN JOSE -- A 37-year-old San Jose man has been identified as the victim of a deadly shooting outside a party at a car-audio shop over the weekend, marking the city's 11th homicide of the year, police said.
Police were called about 2:45 a.m. Saturday to the 1900 block of Senter Road -- near Kelley Park -- on reports of a man lying in a parking lot. Officers found a man suffering from at least one gunshot wound. He died at the scene, and has been identified as Viet Tran of San Jose.
Investigators believe the victim was involved in a "disturbance" at a party at a nearby auto-customizing business Elite Car Audio & Performance, that spilled outside, Officer Albert Morales said.
What led to the shooting remains under investigation. Police said about 25 people associated with the party were detained and questioned.
Morales said members of several Vietnamese street gangs were present at the party and that partygoers inside the building were hostile to police, including some who barricaded themselves in locked rooms and others who hid. Over the course of searching and clearing out the building, police said they fired "less-than-lethal" 40 mm rubber projectiles at four people who had barricaded themselves and defied officers' orders.
Police have not specified whether the shooting was gang-related.
