Seniors are often targeted in scams, and four free seminars are being held to help them become more aware of current frauds.

Assemblyman Bill Quirk, D-Hayward, and the Contractors State License Board are hosting the Senior Scam Stoppers, where those attending will get information on frauds in home repair, auto repair, telecommunications, investments, identify theft, Medicare and other topics. The seminars are open to all.

"The goal is to empower consumers before the damage is done, by educating them about what to look for and what questions they need to ask," Quirk said.

The first event takes place Friday at the Kenneth Aitken Senior Center, 17800 Redwood Road, Castro Valley.

Seminars also are planned July 30 at the Hayward Area Senior Center, 22325 Third St., Hayward; July 31 at the Fremont Multi-Service Senior Center, 40086 Paseo Padre Parkway; and Aug. 1 at the Ralph & Mary Ruggieri Senior Center, 33997 Alvarado-Niles Road, Union City.

All sessions will take place from 1 to 3 p.m.

At the Fremont and Union City seminars, State Controller representatives will help those attending learn if they have any unclaimed property, including securities and cash. Online searches can be done at https://scoweb.sco.ca.gov.
