Milpitas Unified School District's school board has delayed the adoption of a new policy on suicide prevention and awareness to its next meeting, to ensure trustees are comfortable with the language of the document.

The policy recognizes that suicide is a major cause of death among young people and in order to address growing concerns about reducing suicidal behavior and its impact on students and families, aims to present preventive strategies, intervention and postvention procedures, researched by Superintendent Cary Matsuoka.

The policy discussed at Tuesday's board meeting, "New Board Policy to address Suicide Prevention," was presented for a first reading. Trustees received feedback that "suicide awareness" would be a better wording than "suicide prevention," and discussed the ramifications of keeping either syntax for the title and the body of the text.

"I know that I would be more comfortable with Ôsuicide awareness'; with Ôprevention' we are making a promise," said board President Marsha Grilli.

"ÔAwareness' serves the purpose of showing that we can be part of the solution."

During the meeting, the board elected Grilli as the 2014-15 president, Daniel Bobay as the vice president and voted to retain Danny Lau as clerk.
