RICHMOND -- A one-stop event to see, ride and drive alternative fuel vehicles is coming to the Craneway Pavilion, 1414 Harbor Way South, this week.
The AltCar Expo is a regional version of shows that have been held in Southern California and Dallas showcasing vehicles -- including electric, hybrid electric, natural gas and hydrogen cars -- touted as less harmful to the environment than their traditional gasoline counterparts.
The expo will have test-driving opportunities as well as demonstrations of technological advances in alternative technology vehicles, urban planning, energy efficiency and climate education.
Participating manufacturers and organizations will include Honda, Nissan, California Fuel Cell Partnership, San Francisco Clean Cities and East Bay Clean Cities, along with experts on the emerging alternative vehicle industry.
Organizers note that California is among eight states that have set a goal and incentives "to put 3.3 million zero-emission vehicles on the road within a dozen years."
The expo is an informational resource for agencies as well as consumers with the first day of the event on Friday reserved for governmental information sessions on "Getting the Bay Area Ready for Plug-In Electric Vehicles" and "Getting the Bay Area Ready for Alternative Fuels."
The second day on Saturday is for the general public, including businesses, and will feature heavy-, medium- and light-duty alternative vehicles, including some models making their debut.
The event runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day.
"The AltCar Conference comes at a critical time for the Bay Area consumers as they make decisions about choosing alternatives to traditional gasoline-powered vehicles," said Jack Broadbent, chief executive officer/air pollution control officer of the Bay Area Air Quality Management District, one of the sponsoring agencies. "This conference provides an opportunity for the public, local governments and fleet owners to consider different transportation options that will translate into cleaner air in our communities."
Admission to the expo is free. For more details or to register, visit www.altcarexponorcal.com or call 310-390-2930.
