SAN JOSE -- A small fire at a home in the Alum Rock neighborhood led to the discovery Wednesday morning of an "expansive" indoor marijuana growing operation, according to a fire captain.
At 8:46 a.m. San Jose firefighters responded to 351 La Pala Dr., located off McKee Road, after receiving a report of smoke coming from the home's garage, according to fire Capt. Mike Van Elgort.
Fire crews arrived at the home at 8:52 and found a small fire in the garage of the home. When firefighters entered, they discovered marijuana plants in the garage and other rooms in the house.
"This was a fairly expansive operation," Van Elgort said. "There were multiple rooms with plants."
The San Jose Police Department is investigating the marijuana growing operation and did not immediately respond to questions about the case.
Fire crews knocked down the blaze quickly and kept it from spreading to the home, Van Elgort said.
There was no one home at the time of the fire, and there were no injuries associated with the blaze.
