OAKLAND -- The names of two men killed in shootings that happened 14 hours apart Sunday in West and East Oakland were released by police Monday.
A man fatally shot about 6:30 p.m. Sunday inside a house in the 2900 block of West Street in West Oakland was identified as Darvel McGillberry, 19, of Oakland. It was not clear if he lived in the house or in the area.
A man fatally shot about 4:36 a.m. Sunday inside a parked car in the 1400 block of 92nd Avenue was identified as Mikell D. Newell, 27, of Berkeley.
Police found McGillberry after area residents reported gunfire. He died later at a hospital. Police don't have a motive for the killing and no arrests have been made. Officer Leo Sanchez said police believe there were people with McGillberry inside the house when he was shot, but that they left before police arrived. Investigators would like to talk to them, Sanchez said.
Authorities said Newell was the father of a 6-year-old daughter and a 3-month-old son and had worked at a Peninsula quarry.
A 25-year-old San Francisco man who police said is a friend of Newell's was with him in the car and was also wounded but is expected to recover. Officer Sean Fleming said the two men were on their way home from a night out when they decided to stop on 92nd to possibly see some other friends. They were shot by someone outside the vehicle after parking.
Police don't have a motive yet and no arrests have been made in the shooting.
Early Monday, a man and a woman were shot while sitting in a car about a mile from the 92nd Avenue shooting, but police said the shootings are not connected. The two will recover from their wounds, police said.
Wounded were a 23-year-old Oakland man and a 24-year-old Hayward woman. It is believed they were friends. The shooting happened about 12:03 a.m. in the 9100 block of Olive Street and ¿the victims were able to transport themselves to a hospital. Police don't have a motive yet and no arrests have been made.
Up to $15,000 in reward money is being offered for information leading to the arrest of the gunman in the 92nd Avenue shooting and up to $10,000 in each of the other two cases. Anyone with information may call police at 510-238-3821 or a tip line at 510-773-2805.
