BERKELEY -- A power outage Monday morning affected Alta Bates Summit Medical Center, a hospital spokeswoman said. The medical center at 2450 Ashby Ave. lost power at around 11:30 a.m., said Carolyn Kemp, Alta Bates regional manager of public relations. Emergency backup generators immediately switched on to maintain power, Kemp said. No patient services have been affected, and power returned at 2 p.m.

It isn't clear if the equipment that failed belonged to the hospital or PG&E. A utility spokeswoman, Tamar Sarkissian, said no PG&E equipment failed, but the hospital disputed her statement.

The utility had scheduled outages in North Berkeley for Monday morning, which affected 59 customers, but did not include the hospital, Sarkissian said.
