OAKLAND -- A 34-year-old man shot to death Friday night at an East Oakland house near San Antonio Park was identified by police Saturday as Lester Young.

Young was shot multiple times about 6:45 p.m. Friday inside his residence in the 1800 block of Commerce Way, not far from Roosevelt Middle School. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police were summoned to the home after residents in the area heard gunfire.

Police do not have a motive for the killing, said Officer Phong Tran. There was no sign of forced entry, police said, and Young may have known the gunman, who fled before police arrived.

Relatives told police that the victim worked as a handyman at a church, Tran said.

The homicide was Oakland's 87th of the year, two more than last year at this time.

In an unrelated nonfatal shooting, two women were wounded in the legs by gunfire about 10:10 p.m. Friday in the 8400 block of Dowling Street in another section of East Oakland.

The women were taken to a hospital in stable condition.

They were shot by a gunman who fled on foot. Police do not have a motive for that shooting.

Police and Crime Stoppers of Oakland are offering up to $10,000 in reward money for information leading to the arrest of suspects in both the killing and the shooting of the women.
