DALY CITY -- Firefighters treated 14 cats and a dog for smoke inhalation after a house fire Sunday that killed two of the pets, authorities said.

No one was injured in the 12:20 p.m. blaze in the 300 block of Irvington Street, but two of the cats died due to their injuries, said North County Fire Authority spokesman Matt Lucett.

Two residents of the house managed to escape the flames, but firefighters treated the pets for smoke inhalation, Lucett said. The Peninsula Humane Society will help house the animals after the fire.

Officials brought in the Red Cross to help find temporary housing for the displaced residents.

The cause of the blaze, which kept fire crews working at the scene for about two hours, is under investigation, Lucett said.
