ANTIOCH -- A former mayor looking to regain the position he lost four years ago holds a sizable campaign fundraising lead over the other eight candidates running for two City Council seats and mayor here. Donald Freitas has raised $15,898.76 since July 1, and $16,827.76 since the beginning of the year, more than double the amounts raised by each of his three opponents in the Nov. 6 mayoral election; Gary Agopian, Wade Harper and Michael Leon.
Freitas has raised $5,482 more than Monica Wilson, who leads the five council candidates in fundraising.
The fundraising totals were released Oct. 5 and are from a reporting period beginning July 1 and ending Sept. 30.
Most prominent on the list of donors is the Antioch Police Officers Association, which gave $3,000 to Freitas, along with $2,500 to current mayor and council candidate Jim Davis.
Republic Services Inc., whose subsidiary Allied Waste has a long-term contract with Antioch for the city's trash services, donated $2,500 to Freitas' war chest. The company also donated $1,500 to incumbent councilwoman Mary Rocha's campaign.
Freitas received $4,000 in donations from a pair of unions: Public Employees Union Local No. 1 gave $2,500 while Operating Engineers Local Union No. 3 donated $1,500.
Local 1 also gave $2,500 to Wilson and Rocha, and Local 3 gave $1,500 to Wilson.
Vacaville-based Meritage Homes also donated $1,000 to the Freitas campaign.
To date, Agopian has raised $7,595 and Harper $5,600.
Agopian's main donors include a $2,000 donation from Kaiser Permanente Executive Director Charles Poppino, $1,300 from rancher Jack Roddy and $1,000 from Pearson Properties co-owner Daniel Pearson.
Harper's war chest includes $1,000 from the IBEW Local 302, $500 from the Iron Workers Local 378 and a $4,100 loan he took out, according to financial statements.
In the council race, Noel Pinto has received $11,059 thus far this year, Rocha $7,810, Davis $4,648 and Walter Ruehlig $2,230.
The City Clerk's office did not receive financial reports from mayoral candidate Michael Leon, though he has said he is not taking contributions.
