REDWOOD CITY -- For at least the second time this fall, Bay Area burglars have apparently gone beyond gold and iPads and snatched someone's puppy.
In this case, an 11-week-old chocolate Labrador retriever called Gus has been missing since his owner's home in the 200 Block of West Oakwood Boulevard was burglarized Monday, according to Redwood City police. The thieves took electronics and jewelry between 8:30 a.m. and 5:15 p.m. and ran off.
A similar case in San Jose had a happy ending when a 10-year-old girl got her Yorkie-Shih Tzu mix back after it was nabbed from her family home during an Oct. 1 burglary. The dog, named Meeko, turned up in a Los Banos Target store parking lot a few days later.
The Bay Area was hit during the summer with a double digit increase in home burglaries that authorities attributed to roving crooks and budget cut-reduced police forces.
Gus was wearing a collar with a blue, bone-shaped identification tag that bears his owners' phone number. Anyone with information about him can call Redwood City police Detective Josh Chilton at 650-780-7141 or 650-369-3331.
