OAKLAND -- A man was shot Monday afternoon in the Fruitvale district by a robber who unsuccessfully tried to take a gold chain from him, police said.

The man's name, age and place of residence was being withheld pending notification of relatives.

The shooting happened about 2:35 p.m. on Foothill Boulevard between 35th and 36th avenues.

Police said the robber attempted to snatch a gold chain from the man before the shooting but did not get it. It was not immediately known if the man was shot because he resisted or for another reason.

Police said the victim suffered a wound to his abdomen. He was taken to a hospital where his condition was not released.

The robber was described as a black man in his mid 20s, about 6 feet 1 with a muscular build. He was wearing a blue polo shirt with a design on it and bluejeans. He was last seen running southbound on 36th Avenue.

Police and Crime Stoppers of Oakland are offering up to $5,000 in reward money for information leading to the man's arrest.
